Every year on 25th January Scots the world over celebrate the birth of our national poet, Robert Burns. Burns Suppers will be taking place tonight, with poetry, a feast of haggis, neeps and tatties and of course a dram or three of whisky! 🥃🥃🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

This Burns Day, instead of a post looking at the great poet himself, we are turning our attention to his long suffering wife, Jean Armour. Known as the "Belle of Mauchline", Jean and Burns began a relationship in the spring of 1785 and by the end of that year she was pregnant. Meantime, Burns had had a baby with his mother's servant and was also planning on eloping to Jamaica with another woman, "Highland" Mary Campbell. It is said Jean's father fainted on the spot on hearing the news Jean was expecting a baby out of wedlock with Burns! Needless to say James Armour was not that impressed with his potential new son-in-law but he soon changed his mind when Burns became an overnight sensation on the publication of the Kilamarnock edition of his poems! He finally allowed them to marry in 1788 (by which time Burns and Jean had reconciled. and Jean had given birth to two sets of twins by Burns). Jean had 9 children with Burns, only 3 of whom survived to adulthood. He had at least another 4 to other women...

"Bonnie Jean" inspired numerous Burns poems including I Love my Jean. She's thought to be the muse for possibly the most romantic of all Burns' poems, "A Red, Red Rose" 🌹🌹🌹(I have to admit a soft spot for that one, it was recited at our wedding💗)

So if you are attending a Burns Supper tonight, during the Toast to the Lassies spare a thought for Bonnie Jean!

There are 2 statues of Jean in Scotland, one in Dumfries where she is accompanied by a small child, and a beautiful bronze in her home town of Mauchline (created by my very talented friend, the sculptor Ruaraig Maciver).
