We headed south recently on a wee trip just over the border to Carlisle in the north of England. Plenty of links to Scotland at the castle, a shared Reiving history and a stunning cathedral!

🤴King David I of Scotland and formerly Prince of the Cumbrians died at Carlisle Castle in 1153
👸Mary, Queen of Scots was imprisoned here for 3 months in 1568, where she was attended by 30-40 servants and numerous ladies in waiting. While in captivity, she was allowed ‘to walk on a playing green towards Scotland’ and watched her retinue playing football on it.
⛔️ She was to remain imprisoned in England for the next 18 and a half years before finally being executed by her cousin Elizabeth I of England in 1587
⛪️ Dating to the early 12th century, Carlisle Cathedral has had a turbulent history. The nave was destroyed during the civil wars of the 17th century, and Jacobite soldiers were imprisoned here in 1745
💞Scottish novelist and author of the Waverley novels Sir Walter Scott married Charlotte Charpentier here on Christmas Eve 1797
🌟The ceiling timbers date to the 14th century but the beautiful blue and gold decoration was added in the mid-1800s
🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 The lawlessness of the Anglo-Scots border was notorious, with the infamous Border Reivers raiding and plundering along both sides of the border. Reiving was at its height in the 16th century, to the point where Gavin Dunbar, Bishop of Glasgow, crafted a curse to be read from the pulpit of all local churches.
👹The so-called ‘mother of all curses’ condemns the Reivers, their body parts, their families, their horses and their homes and goes on for over 1000 words.
😱Around 300 words of it have made it onto the Cursing Stone, a large granite artwork installed in 2000.
The stone has been controversial from the start, and has been blamed for the outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the region and local floods!
