Melrose Abbey in the Scottish Borders.
Founded in 1136, this Cistercian Abbey was repeatedly attacked by English forces during the Middle Ages. The ruins we see today date mainly from the late 14th century when the Abbey had to be rebuilt following a devastating attack by the English army of Richard II. The Abbey contains some of the finest surviving examples of medieval sculpture in Britain.
