Hope everyone has been enjoying the antics of the Tartan Army over in Boston for the World Cup! Glad to see the Glasgow tradition of putting cones on statues is alive and well across the pond 😂⚽️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿The Scottish fans didn't just bring bagpipes and beer to Boston.

They brought traffic cones for the statues too.

If trees could talk, this one would have some tales to tell!
This is the Birnam Oak, 600 years old and the last remaining tree of the Birnam Wood mentioned by Shakespeare in Macbeth.

In the play Macbeth is warned by the witches that he will not be overthrown until Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane. Macbeth decides to ignore the witches with their crazy talk of trees moving around and commits several murders in pursuit of the Scottish throne. However Malcolm’s army take branches from the trees in the wood, use them to disguise themselves, and ultimately Macbeth meets a sticky end (it is a tragedy after all!)

Shakespeare is rumoured to have visited Perthshire with a group of travelling players in 1589, so perhaps he visited here and took inspiration from the forest ✍️

The oak in folklore is the king of the forest, and a hollow in an oak tree is said to be a fairy door, or a gateway to supernatural realms. The word ‘druid’ may come from a Celtic word meaning “knower of the oak tree” 🌳 🌳🌳

Oban - Kilmartin - Inveraray

A gorgeous drive down the west coast from the port of Oban to Kilmartin, a globally significant archaeological site with burial cairns, stone circles and standing stones dating from the Neolithic and Bronze Ages. The museum and the churchyard at Kilmartin village are well worth a visit. Then on to Inveraray for coffee and a stroll by Loch Fyne 🗿⚓️☀️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Beautiful weather this week for my group from Tennessee! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇺🇸 Cool wind but warm in the sun for a visit to Glen Nevis and the Ben Nevis Malt Whisky Distillery 🥃

Ben Nevis is the UK’s highest mountain at 4413ft. Still some snow on the summit, and plenty of hikers enjoying the spring sunshine! ⛰️☀️🍃

I have had great fun over the past few days working with French groups in town for the rugby with plenty of laughs along the way 😀 Apparently there are * 15,000 * French rugby fans in Edinburgh this weekend and the Royal Mile is a sea of red, white and blue!

There is a long history of friendship between Scotland and France. At the end of the thirteenth century the two countries shared a mutual enemy - the English! So they signed an agreement, the terms of which meant that should England invade either country, the other would go to their aid. This ‘Auld Alliance’ is considered the oldest military alliance in the world.

Although the alliance was officially ended in the 16th century, its spirit lives on! And this afternoon the two teams will compete at Murrayfield for the Auld Alliance Cup 🏉🏉🏉

Bonne chance aux deux équipes, que la meilleure gagne! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇫🇷
